Angela Cavalieri’s practice is centred on the art of writing; she employs literary, religious and historical narratives where selected texts eventually manifest as image. Whatever the source, much of the inspiration derives from her migrant family background where Italian was the first language she spoke. It is this intimate and personal connection that the artist uses to explore and play with ideas of language, storytelling and culture.
The artist has a long running connection with the City of Yarra, in her formative years attending Fitzroy College which sparked her interest in art. She has worked in various studios located in Yarra, including a studio at the Gertrude Street Art Spaces (now Gertrude Contemporary).
Cavalieri is represented in major international and national collections and in 2012-2013 undertook a prestigious Creative Fellowship at the State Library of Victoria where she studied rare books and musical scores from their collections.
